A quieter kind of struggle

Lowcountry to Upstate, food can mean far more than a meal.

In South Carolina, food is woven into so much: Sunday dinners, shrimp boils on the coast, tailgates in Columbia and Clemson, church potlucks in small towns across the Midlands. When an eating disorder is part of your life, those gatherings can bring dread instead of comfort. You might be a student in Rock Hill, a nurse in Greenville, a parent in Summerville, or someone in Myrtle Beach whose busy season leaves little room to eat.

Whatever your situation, an eating disorder is not about willpower or manners at the table. It is an illness that can affect how you think, feel, and function. If you find yourself planning around food, hiding what you eat or do not eat, or feeling controlled by your body, you deserve specialized support that respects your values and your life.

1If you are the one struggling

Your questions are welcome before any decision.

You might not be sure whether what you are dealing with counts as an eating disorder, or whether you are ready to do anything about it. That is okay. Plenty of people call simply to understand their options and then take time to decide.

Our admissions team will ask about what has been happening, explain our PHP and IOP programs, and talk through practical concerns like travel and housing. If you want a preview, read about how to choose an eating disorder program.

2If you love someone who is

Supporting them without losing yourself.

Families in South Carolina often carry a strong sense of taking care of their own. That loyalty is a gift, and it can also leave parents, spouses, and siblings exhausted and unsure where to turn. Our guide to helping someone with an eating disorder offers concrete ideas that protect both of you.

If your loved one comes to Austin, our family education keeps you informed and involved. You will learn what treatment is addressing and how to support the changes your loved one is making once they return to Charleston, Spartanburg, or wherever home is.

A home base in Austin

A real home base during treatment.

Traveling from the Grand Strand, the Pee Dee, or the Upstate is only practical if you have somewhere supportive to live. Our transitional housing is a real house in Austin's Hyde Park neighborhood, available with PHP or IOP. It gives you structure in the evenings and on weekends, the company of others in recovery, and a calm place to practice what you are learning each day.

What care looks like

Every part of the team, working from the same page.

A good plan only helps if everyone follows it. At Empowered, therapists, registered dietitians, a family therapist, and psychiatric providers meet regularly to review your progress and adjust care together. You are not left to explain yourself over and over to different providers. When you are preparing to return to South Carolina, the team helps you set up outpatient care so you do not leave without a plan.

Brittni Pogue
“When someone calls us, my first priority is making sure they feel heard and not rushed, because picking up the phone is often the hardest part. From there, we take the practical questions one at a time so that starting care feels clear and manageable.”

Questions families ask

What South Carolinians often ask us.

How quickly can someone from South Carolina start?

Timing depends on your assessment, insurance, and travel plans. Our admissions team works to move as quickly as is safe and practical. Read what happens when you call for a sense of the steps.

Can my family visit while I'm in Austin?

Family involvement is encouraged, and many relatives take part in family education. Visiting arrangements depend on your program schedule and housing, so ask our team what is possible during your stay.

What if I'm a parent with kids at home?

Arranging care for children is one of the most common concerns we hear. Our page on eating disorder treatment while parenting offers ideas, and our team can talk through scheduling options like IOP.

Is treatment at Empowered only in person?

Yes. All programming takes place at our center in Northwest Austin. People traveling from South Carolina usually stay in our transitional housing while they attend.
