What looks healthy is not always well.

Oregon offers a lot of ways to be outside, from trail runs in Forest Park to ski days on Mount Hood and long rides through the Willamette Valley. That brings real good. It can also give cover to compulsive exercise, rigid eating, or restrictive diets that look like healthy living from the outside. Eating disorders do not always announce themselves, and the people closest to you may not see one.

They show up in students in Eugene and Corvallis, in healthcare and tech workers in Portland and Hillsboro, and in people across Bend, Medford, and the eastern counties. They affect adults of every body size and background. If thoughts about food, exercise, or your body are getting louder and harder to quiet, that is worth taking seriously, whatever anyone else can see.

1If you are the one struggling

Food does not have to be a battle forever.

Maybe you have been told to just eat more, or less, or more intuitively, and none of it has touched what is really happening. Eating disorders are not solved by willpower or better information. They respond to treatment that addresses the thoughts, emotions, and habits that keep them going.

A first call is free and private. You will talk with a member of our team about what you are noticing, what you have tried, and whether PHP or IOP would be a better fit. To learn how we understand your needs, read what an assessment involves.

2If you love someone who is

Noticing is the first part of helping.

Families often sense something is off long before they can name it. A loved one who never misses a workout, avoids shared meals, or seems irritable around food may be struggling. You do not need certainty to express concern. Our guide for loved ones walks through warning signs and a gentle way to begin.

If they begin treatment in Austin, family education gives you a clearer view of the illness and practical ways to support recovery. It is a place to ask questions, learn what helps, and get ready for the return home to Oregon.

A home base in Austin

A Hyde Park home during treatment.

Committing to treatment about 1,700 miles from Portland means daily life needs a place to happen. Our transitional housing is a real house in Austin's Hyde Park neighborhood, open to adults in PHP or IOP. Living with others in recovery gives the evenings structure and company, and it lets you practice everyday skills in a supportive setting before heading back to Oregon.

What care looks like

Every clinician, on the same page.

Empowered is organized so that nothing about your care is siloed. Therapists, registered dietitians, psychiatric providers, and a family therapist share one plan, meet often, and talk directly with you about changes to it. When you are ready to step down, we help coordinate aftercare with clinicians in Oregon so the plan keeps working once you are home.

“When someone reaches out from the other side of the country, I want them to know they are not signing up to be managed, they are joining a team that will get to know them as a whole person. Recovery asks a lot, and our job is to make sure no one has to carry those demands alone.”

Oregon plans and out-of-state care

Before you book anything, we can review your benefits together and explain how your plan approaches care in another state.

  • Begin with verify your insurance, or call and our team will check coverage with you
  • If your insurer is based in Oregon, ask how it covers out-of-network PHP and IOP delivered in Texas; we can help you prepare questions and understand the response
  • The Oregon Division of Financial Regulation has consumer advocates who help with insurance questions and complaints
  • If you are covered through Medicaid, coverage for care outside your home state is usually limited, so call us and we will help you figure out what applies

Questions families ask

Oregon questions worth asking.

Is Austin very different from Oregon?

In some ways, yes. Austin is warmer and sunnier, especially in summer, and the landscape is Hill Country rather than forests and mountains. A change of scenery can make it easier to set aside old routines while you focus on treatment, and our team can share tips on settling in.

Does exercise get addressed in treatment?

Yes. For many people, exercise is tangled up with the eating disorder, and we look at that carefully rather than ignoring it. Your team will help you understand your relationship with movement and, when it is appropriate, rebuild it in a way that supports recovery.

What if I am in my 40s, 50s, or older?

Eating disorders affect adults at every age, including people who have struggled for decades and people who developed symptoms later in life. Our programs are designed for adults. Read more about eating disorders in midlife and beyond.

How do I return to Oregon without losing progress?

We plan the step-down with you, often moving from PHP to IOP before you leave, and we help line up a therapist, dietitian, and psychiatric provider in Oregon. Reading about relapse prevention ahead of time can help you prepare for the transition.
