Individual Therapy
You are more than your eating disorder, and your disorder is about more than food.
Individual therapy is at the core of what we do at Empowered, taking a deep dive into the trauma, attachment wounds, and co-occuring disorders that so often pre-date an eating disorder. Each client will participate in at least one individual therapy session weekly.
Why is Individual Therapy part of our program?
Eating Disorders are complex mental health disorders characterized by persistent disturbances in eating behaviors. Self-worth often becomes fused with weight, yet the development and maintenance of these disorders involves so much more than food and weight. Eating disorders are not a choice, they result from a complicated interweave of biological, psychological, and sociocultural factors. The negative impact of eating disorders includes various severe medical complications and impairment of psychological and social functioning. They can disrupt a person's entire sense of self and prevent the ability to be present and engaged in their day to day lives and in relationships.
-
Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT)
CBT helps individuals to identify and challenge automatic thoughts and beliefs that contribute to mental health challenges. This method emphasizes the connection between thoughts, feelings, and actions, and aims to teach practical strategies for alternative ways to cope and thrive.
-
Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT)
DBT is similar to CBT but focuses primarily on emotions. This methodology helps an individual to identify, understand, and manage their emotions in a healthy way to help improve their decision-making and interpersonal relationships.
-
Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT)
ACT helps individuals identify and understand their personal values, so that they can make decisions in-line with what is most important to them. They will focus on identifying thoughts and emotions, but will learn techniques to separate their long term goals from their short term struggles.
-
Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR)
EMDR is an evidence-based technique used for treating trauma and other distressing experiences. Our therapists will help a client recall a memory while simultaneously engaging in eye movements, tapping, or other bilateral stimulation. This stimulation is proven to help the brain process and integrate the memory, reducing its negative impact.
